P7 classes enjoy a trip to the Ulster American Folk Park
In December the P7 classes all take a trip to the American Folk Park in Omagh. The pupils and staff were given a guided tour of the park and were told lots of interesting facts about life in Famine times. Fiadhnait Doran wrote a few lines to tell us about her class trip.
‘At the Folk Park we went on a guided tour. We visited a one roomed cabin in which a family of 12 lived. The cabin was brought all the way from Derry to be part of the Folk Park exhibition. Then we visited ‘Campbell’s House’ where only 5 people lived! We visited the Schoolhouse which was built in 1845, around the start of the massive Famine!
The guide told us that during the Famine people played a little game, if you got a card showing someone ‘Young and Rich’ you won a ticket to go on the Famine ship to America. We went into the Famine ship but were not allowed onto the deck due of restrictions. It was a great trip!’
