2016 Voice Box awards:

Speaker's search for Stormont joker

Launching the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA and Vivienne Fitzroy, RCSLT Northern RCSLT) 2016 Voice Box Awards are Fergus Cooper, of Save the Children, former finalist Aiobh Cahalane, Ireland policy officer.

What is Voice Box?

Voice Box is a joint initiative from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the Northern Ireland Assembly, designed to raise awareness of the fun and importance of communication. Voice Box is a national joke-telling competition for pupils throughout Northern Ireland and it offers schools a light-hearted and inclusive way for pupils to develop their communication skills and build their confidence and self-esteem.

Over 100 pupils from KS2 took part in “The Voice Box Awards2016” school competition.

The pupils had to write their favourite joke and submit it to a panel of judges. The TOP TEN jokes were chosen and then the pupils ALL had an opportunity to vote on their favourite one.

There was a fantastic response to the competition and it was lovely to see so many children from all the year groups taking part. We had lots of smiles and laughs as the children voted.

Our winner was “Fionn” from P.5 and his joke went forward forward to the NI.Voice Box awards shortlisting. We heard on Monday that he has made it to the LIVE FINAL on the 7th March in Parliament Buildings, Stormont and is in with a chance to win an ipad. Fionn’s joke will feature in the 2016 Northern Ireland Voice Box Joke Book and we wish him every success in the finals. I would like to thank ALL the pupils who took part.

All children who submitted a joke will receive a certificate of participation.
